Future Tradition Project by INNOVO

In 2009, Lei Zhang (China) the founder of Chinese design studio INNOVO met Jovana Bogdanovic (Serbia) and Christoph John (Germany) in Milan (Italy). In the following 2 years, they worked together on the “Future Tradition” project in Milan and in China.  Together, they created the PINWU collection that explores the many creative possibilities of paper.

In August 2010 I visited a small village in the Yuhang area, China. There I met 4 craftsmen who were producing original Yuhang paper umbrellas. But actually, those umbrellas disappeared already for about 50 years from the public society. According to the today’s requirements they are too heavy, too low quality and just too old-fashioned. So our goal is to help them, to change it. Finally we created new designs by keeping the traditional roots. ~ Lei Zhang

The Piao paper chair uses the same craft that is commonly used in making a traditional paper umbrella. The paper layers are combined until the chair is strong enough to sit on, but is still keeping its flexibility. Other works that are inspired by the traditional umbrella include the Na foldable waste basket, the Wu paper lamp, and the Chao paper storage.
