New York-based Taiwanese artist Shih Chieh Huang (黃世傑)’s work explores the unusual evolutionary adaptations undertaken by the mysterious, deep ocean creatures residing in conditions inhospitable for humans. During Huang’s time as a Smithsonian artist research fellow, he explored the bioluminescent marine organisms that inspired this art installation. His creations, with their lights, computer parts, and plastic-tube appendages, evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity as they “float” in the darkness of the gallery.
The exhibition, The Bright Beneath: The Luminous Art of Shih Chieh Huang, is on view at Sant Ocean Hall's Ocean Focus Gallery, Natural History Museum, September 3, 2011 – January 8, 2012
